New Year’s Resolution 2012

- Less night activities, More day activities.

- Eat proper meals. Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner.  Also, Less Takeaways.

- Vitamins

- Be more decisive.

- Remember my goals, nothing stands in the way. NOTHING.

- Continue Isolating myself from idiots, but be a MUCH better friend to those I care about.

- Less of that selfishness. I need to learn that.

- Always think about Mum and Dad. Always. They made my life happen. Not just in the sense that they gave birth to me but in supporting me, in me being a leech.

- Be financially independent, look for a job or start a profitable business, find money etc

- Decide on what to do with my life. If not for the rest of my life, at least short term.

- Read more, learn more, think more. Get those brains back.

- Be less dependent on Kris for company.

- Do not be too kind to Kris. Be as nice as he is willing to be. That’s right.

Prepare the world for a revolution

Designers, artists, writers.. (the creatives) are meant to be the thinkers and problem solvers of the world, we should all start thinking of ideas that would help a revolution-esque situation - let’s face it, looking at the state of the present world, it’s gonna happen. And when it does, it’ll be a smooth transition. People now are different from people in the past. We’re a lot more compassionate, a well-educated lot, and there’s this global awareness as we learn so much about what is going on in the world through this magnificent medium we’re on right now, the INTERNET.

Moreover, as a designer, I see this as a wonderful opportunity to organise and be part of history making in the art world. A new art movement. Much like Post-War Modernism. Yeah this is exciting stuff.

Now that employment is on the rise, so many of us art graduates are without a job. Instead of trying so hard to look for work that would feed the dreadful top end of the spectrum of whom we are so dissatisfied with (a.k.a The Man), why not use our creative juices for working towards changing the world in to a better place? Isnt that what we creatives talk about all the time?

Let’s raise awareness of all the bullshit that is going on with our current system, and help think of solutions to resolve the problems through our art and designs and writing.

See Beauty in Ugly

Any good fashion design / design process that is worth looking at / embarking usually draws inspiration from the Ugly. Be it cracks, rot, crease, stains, scary ghosts, skeletons, death, mess, scaffolding, dirt, list goes on… anything imperfect or weird. There is satisfaction in creating something beautiful from an ugly starting point. It is almost like problem solving. Also, more than likely you’d be able to come up with something original.

If you start with something beautiful, for example, flowers or butterflies or mosaic or the sky etc, more than likely you will tend to lift from it and create something which might tarnish it’s original form.

Good Design Might Not Just Be No Design.

For a long period of time, I’ve been stuck within the paradigm of Function > Form. Lately however I’ve begun to cut myself loose of being stubborn about any one way of doing thing. Form, Aesthetics, they might not be that bad a thing. In fact it isn’t a bad thing at all. If everybody follows strictly the 10 Principles of Good Design by Dieter Rams, the world may well look very neat and tidy with the consequence of the world looking cold, mechanic with a resemblance of the communist society. A job of making things look good isn’t all that pointless. Afterall, it has been proven that what people see affects their mental state of mind. It’s true, it applies to both sight and sound. Seeing something or hearing something that you like helps releases Dopamine in your brain.

Good aesthetic design can be challenging as well. It isn’t always as simple as drawing flowers and butterflies all over the place. A clever use of proportion and original construction methods could make a world of difference to one’s design work. Therefore I aim to fulfill both Function AND Form in my design work from now on.

smaller the better.

Singular fibres are like the letters in the alphabetical system in which we use to form words and sentences and then paragraphs, essays, poems, in whatever style or language the writer chooses to use letters. Likewise, fibres could be used to form different sorts of yarns, textiles, textures, chained together to form and create in infinite possible ways according to the designer’s take on aesthetics and their understanding of the fibre.

The most powerful thing one can create is a singular module, like a cell, that could be used to build bigger things, open for interpretation.

In case of a designer, look for the smallest thing, the most basic thing to work with.
